Solo Travel is NOT Your “Trip of a Lifetime”
What does Trip of a Lifetime mean then?
“Wow, you are about to leave on your Trip of a Lifetime”.
WRONG!
How many times have you read those words “Trip of a Lifetime?”.
They come up in thousands of travel articles online, with newspapers and magazines over-using the phrase. This is lazy journalism.
Look at travel advertising in any form and you’ll see the same statement - “Book with us for the trip of a lifetime”.
With very few exceptions, this phrase is a load of rubbish.
OK, so a trip to the North Pole or South Pole both qualify, or perhaps a submarine to the bottom of the Mariana Trench.
Otherwise, ignore anyone trying to extract money from you for a trip of a lifetime. It’s a con.
What Is a Trip of a Lifetime?
Many years ago, I was talking to a seasoned traveller, about a trip I was about to make to the Comoros Islands in the Indian Ocean. I described the plan to him, as my ‘Trip of a Lifetime’.
“No”, he said, “That’s where you are wrong. This is your FIRST Trip of a Lifetime”.
Those words, spoken to me back in 2001, resonated in my mind. Since then, I taken many trips of a lifetime to remote islands and countries around the globe and will continue use to do so.
When planning your first solo travel experience, remember to make it your ‘first’ trip of a lifetime. The first of many.
You’ll be glad you did.
